Questionnaire analysis

Through my collection of results I have found out many things about the target audience I have chosen. One thing I have found out from my questionnaire is that teenagers seem to prefer thrillers that have a lot of explosions and dramatic twists in them. From this I have gathered that they prefer movies such as action and catastrophe movies as well as ones that create a sense of uneasiness such as psychological thrillers. This has helped me adapt my opening as I will now add in parts that may confuse the audience as well as parts that create a sense of pace such as a chase which I may now incorporate.

I have also found out from my research that my target audience also seem to enjoy thrillers that have a sense of mystery in them as well as fear. This is most evident as two of my questionnaire participants chose thrillers that have a lot of darkness in them (Seven and The Woman in Black). This has also made me think about how I can adjust lighting as both of these movies have very dark parts in them which may fit in with my chosen genre.

Another thing I have found out from my questionnaire is that slow dramatic music seems to be a favourite over fast paced music. This means that my audience prefer to have a sense of mystery and tension as slow music creates both of these if used correctly. This has made me think about how fast I need the music to be as to not spoil the whole piece which is aimed at teenagers.

I have also found out that rain could work during my thriller; however his may be hard to do unless it is raining. However, one of my original ideas of a black and white filter when from the monsters view may not be as effective as colour as I have found out from my questionnaire that teenagers do not think a black and white filter will work in a thriller so I may have to adjust my idea for the monsters view.

In conclusion, I have learnt that teenagers seem to prefer fast paced action and confusion but do not enjoy the faced paced music of them and they think slower paced could be used to greater effect.  I have also found out that I may have to adjust some original ideas I had to fit their needs. This means I will have to adapt my thriller opening to fit their specification’s or come close to them.

Planning 4-Props

Props

I will be using very few props throughout the opening as there will be no use of weapons or and type of interaction with external sources apart from the characters phone when his friend texts him asking him to come meet him at his house. I will use this as a prop to create a sense of a stereotypical teenager who is always on their phone. I will also use this slightly later during the opening as the character will drop his phone which means the story could be led on to create a sense of an actual opening instead of a whole narrative. I will lead it on so it could continue on to when he goes to retrieve his phone and is attacked again but this time the monster follows him and attacks the whole neighbourhood.

The lighting of my thriller opening will need to vary in different places throughout to create different senses such as mystery and fear, and light meaning safety. The darkness to create fear and mystery is going to be in the copse shots were the suns light will be broken by trees and leaves. However, if light is coming in through a wrong area where it looks out of place, it may ruin that feeling so some light blocking may need to be used. The idea of light I will use is the one where it means safety as the character is going to be out in the open light so he looks safe but it is then contradicted with a shadow slowly creeping up to extinguish the light to remove his apparent “safety”. I will also try to incoprate ideas from expressionist cinema where sharp lines of shadow break up the scene. I could do this by using tree branches to create the sharp shadow effect.

Today I thought about changes that could be made and difficulties that I could come across during the filming. One of these problems was the monsters appearance. Since I have no budget I will make cuts as to not show the attack e.g. when it’s happening, get POV, from the monsters view. This could also create an effect of mystery as you do not know what the monster looks like but it can also be used to show a variety of shots types and editing. I’ve had to change to the editing because it is hard to create a monster on no budget. However, if the attack is shown from a different angle i will have to use framing to make sure to remove where the monster would be.

Planning 2-Costume

Costume

The costume that the character will use in mu thriller opening is a selection of clothes that a teenager commonly wears. This will be clothes such as jackets, t-shirts and jeans or cargo trousers. I have chosen this as a costume as it very common for teenagers to wear a similar outfit and it creates an effect of empathy with the audience as they can relate to the clothes they are wearing. I will also use a phone as a prop as a phone is also commonly used by teenagers which my thriller is aimed at. This increases the feeling of empathy within the piece. The reason i have chosen quite alot of red and black is beacuase red represents danger as it is the same colour as blood and black could be seen to represent shadows and darkness. Humans generally find both of these scary or evil. This foreshadows the charecters attack when he is in the dark forested copse of trees. One influence i have got for this idea is from the movie "The Cabin In The Woods" where the characters wear their own clothes that seem natural to them.

The reason I have chosen this location to do my thriller opening is because it is an abandoned area where not many people go because it is in the middle of nowhere and nothing is there apart from rubbish and grass. I have chosen this area as it can be used to create a sense of abandonment where no one can help the character which I hope to portray through the use of longshots and extreme longshots of the area. I have also chosen this area as it has everything I need to create a dramatic area to create the above effect.

The area has many features such as small hills where I can take my longshots and extreme long shots from and a copse of trees which I can use for the main part of the opening. The area is also fairly quite as it is a small walk away from any houses so no background noise will be extremely present such as TV noises, music and car engines. I have also recived influence from "Chernobyl Diaries" where they are in a place where no one can help them if they get into trouble.

Iron Man 3 title sequence

Iron man 3

This is a good title sequence for the concept of Iron Man 3 which was originally a comic book. This is good as it still keeps the comic book feeling alive as it is using a montage type effect. This works well as it also suits the idea of tech within iron man as the CGI that is onscreen could relate to computers as it has computer coding in the background.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This shot also stick to the idea of tech and being a comic as the original shots above then moves over to a computer drawing of Iron Mans gauntlet. This is done by some use of fades and movement round an area. This is an effective use of camerawork as it creates a continuity style which makes it run smoother and seems to make more sense.

This shot also works for a good title sequence. This is because this shot is moved to via some camera movements. This makes it better as the moving parts within this scene also connote the moving parts of a machine which the whole movie is related to as Iron Man is a suit of mechanised armour. The computer coding effect is also used again, to relate to robots and machines again. This also give it a futuristic style which is also effective as the titles come up and disappear in what to seems a way that computer coding would be similar to. The title is also in a sharp font which similar to the computer coding itself.

 

 

This shot is also effective in the title sequence as it seems to be the circuits of the Iron Man suit. This is also revealed by cut aways and camera movements to get to a high angle shots of the computer generated circuit. This lets us feel as if we now have an overview of the inner workings of the Iron Man suit. The orange colour parts in this shot also suit the titles as they are the same colour so it makes the titles seem as if they belong there.

 

This shot is also effective in the same way as the above ones as they are connected by camera movements in a montage effect. This once again fits the comic book style opening. This shots also has effective use of editing as from the previous shots, we have fast editing and camera movements to get to this stage which seems to be the Iron Man suit being programmed. The green glow also could relate to a slight sci-fi feel as it is rather ominous, and similar to The Matrix, it has computer coding as well as green on the screen which makes it seem rather techy and interesting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Opening titles of thrillers

Gangster thriller-has a cartoon strip feel to it and has use of clever editing.

Paranormal-El Orfanato- playing with shadows, quick appearances and disappearances as well as dissolves.

Sci-fi-computer code and relations to technology e.g. sliding parts.

Horror-use of a montage style. Darkness is very apparent.

Se7en opening

The title sequence of Se7en is effective for its genre as it has conventions that relate to horror. This is good as it has scabby fingers which could relate to the feeling of injury within the movie as well as adding a mystery as you can only see the fingers of the character and the book they are working on. It also fits the idea of darkness into the titles as the whole area of the title sequence is very dark and you cannot see where the setting is and only see what the hands are doing. The titles also use a type of montage effect where it shows multiple things being cut out from papers and books. This creates a fear effect as the darkness blends in with the hand and most of the scene is not visible. This makes it fit the Horror genre as it creates that scare factor. The titles themselves are also creating a scare factor as they are fading and dissolving which makes the whole area feel slightly spooky and ominous. The dissolving could also be a connotation for ghosts and mystery. The action that is taking place could also relate to the genre as it seems to be a type of ransom note being cut out. This could connote a murder or a kidnapping or other crime.

 

Skyfall

The opening for Skyfall is a rather strange opening and as usual to a 007 movie it is mainly based on special effects in a type of montage effect. This is effective as it gives us some idea what will happen in the movie, such as drowning which happens towards the end. It is also effective as the music available also relate to the destruction that happens in the movie. The effects on the titles is also effective as it dissolves and fades. This makes it good as it makes the title seem more interesting towards the audience. It is also effective as the montage effect makes the whole title sequence seem smooth and steady as it does not flick between clips as it is one large edited piece that merges into different items and scenes as it is going on. This shows continuity within the movie. Also, the use of blood in a part of it and the use of red also relates to the danger that the main character is constantly placed in throughout the movie. This also makes it effective as blood is common in fights which also go on in a lot of the movie.
